Thank you for your  interest in Cape St. Elias light station.  We are eager to share this wondrous place with everyone.  You will land on the beach approximately 3 miles from the “Cape”. At low water there are some relatively easy sections but it is overall a fairly rigorous trek. At high water it is difficult, we suggest you consult the tide book before departure.

Please contact the flight company directly for an airfare estimate. Lodging is $125.00 per night for two, and $10.00 extra per person.

Lodging at the Cape is rustic, meaning there is no electricity or running water.  However, the beach just out front provides wood fuel that will last millenniums, and the catchment system is crude but adequate, providing you boil the water for a full 5 minutes.  The main cabin or research center is very large, and I think quite comfortable.  The following list includes some items  already found at the Cape which you are welcome to use.

Bunks for 10, dishes, pots & pans, eating and cooking utensils, spices, tools, propane stove & oven PLEASE PILOT LIGHT “OUT” UPON DEPARTURE,

Propane lights (use sparingly), oil lamps, some dried & canned goods which are there for emergency. There is also a 3rd class shower system which gives 1st class relief if it is set up, if not then you’ll need to figure it out.

Note: from my own comfort level I usually choose to bring the following and usually more:

Sleeping sheet, bath towel, matches, binoculars, water flavoring i.e. kool-aid of some sort, food for however many days... canned salmon is great. Bug spray, camera, candy bars, good hiking shoes, flip flops are light and convenient to have, a good book, kerosene and flat wicks (the kind you advance by rolling up) for the lamps, spare batteries, most cell phone will work from outside the cupola, VHF radio, and if you bring glass bottled libations, please take the bottles to the beach and break to encourage sea glass for the future.

We only ask that you read the check in/out letters posted in the cabin, and pay special attention to your garbage by either burning it or packing it out.  The bears love garbage and if we let them know it is available, they may acquire a taste for humans too!

Enjoy your stay!
